Non-Toxic Wallpaper and PVC-Free Wall Coverings
Beautiful patterns, better material choices, and the details worth checking before you cover a wall.

I love what wallpaper can do to a room. A beautiful pattern can make a hallway feel more welcoming, bring movement into a dining room, or add the kind of texture that paint alone cannot quite give you.
But wallpaper is one of those things where the material behind the design deserves a closer look. The paper, coating, ink, adhesive and even the wall underneath all play a part. Here are the specific products I would look at first, and how to decide which one makes sense for your space.

What are you shopping for?
These shortcuts lead straight to relevant recommendations, not a long list of technical terms.
Beautiful wallpaper with better materials
The rating belongs to the specific wallpaper material described in each card, not to everything the brand sells. A Best rating for pre-pasted paper does not mean it is the right product for every room.
Chasing Paper
Handloom Stripe, Traditional Wallpaper
Best for: A permanent feature wall with beautiful pattern and thoughtful paper sourcing
FSC-certified traditional paper and GREENGUARD Gold-certified printing inks. The Handloom Stripe design celebrates South Asian-inspired artistry.
Choose Traditional at checkout. The brand also offers Faux Grasscloth and Matte Performance Vinyl, which are different materials.
Spoonflower
Colorama, Pre-Pasted Wallpaper
Best for: Easy installation, lots of independent-artist designs, and a paper-based option
PVC-free paper with water-activated adhesive and GREENGUARD Gold-certified water-based inks.
Choose the Pre-Pasted material. Spoonflower also sells other wallpaper substrates, including vinyl. Allow new paint and primer to cure as instructed.
Livette’s Wallpaper
Watercolor Brush Stroke, Eco Matte Peel & Stick
Best for: Renters, nurseries, and anyone wanting a removable matte finish without PVC
Eco Matte is a PVC-free, FSC-certified nonwoven substrate printed with GREENGUARD Gold-certified inks. Its low-tack backing is intended for properly prepared walls.
Select Peel & Stick Eco Matte. This is not the same as every material Livette’s sells. Test a sample on your wall finish before ordering.
Walls By Me
Grey Leaf Peel & Stick Wallpaper
Best for: DIY projects needing a sturdy-feeling matte wallpaper and easier removal
The peel-and-stick option is a PVC-free, paper-based nonwoven reinforced with synthetic fibers, with GREENGUARD Gold-certified printing inks.
Choose Peel & Stick, not the brand’s separate commercial vinyl wallcovering. Removability depends on the wall and its paint.
Mitchell Black
Fusion Before, Premium PVC-Free Nonwoven
Best for: Design-led rooms where you want a smooth, washable, nonwoven wallpaper
The Premium Traditional substrate is smooth, PVC-free, paste-the-wall nonwoven. The brand uses GREENGUARD Gold-certified inks and prints to order.
Choose Premium / Traditional PVC-Free. Do not assume its Type II vinyl or other formats have the same material profile.
Wallism
Spring Valley I, Premium Wallpaper
Best for: Nature-inspired murals or a custom-fit accent wall
The Premium wallpaper option is PVC-free nonwoven with a matte finish. Wallism sizes murals for the wall, so pattern and dimensions can be tailored to the space.
The manufacturer describes its materials as non-toxic, but we did not confirm an independent emissions certificate for the assembled finished product.
York Wallcoverings
Natural Grasscloth Peel & Stick
Best for: Warmth, tactile texture, and a more organic look than printed patterns
A real woven sisal grasscloth face over a peel-and-stick backing. The texture and tonal changes are part of the appeal.
The adhesive backing chemistry is not fully disclosed on the product page. Natural fibers may not be the right choice for frequently damp surfaces.
Tempaper & Co.
Glyph Geo Unpasted Wallpaper
Best for: A more approachable-priced PVC-free traditional wallpaper with a graphic pattern
PVC-free nonwoven wallpaper, designed and printed in the USA with substrate made in Belgium. Sold by the double roll.
This recommendation is for Glyph Geo Unpasted. Much of Tempaper’s removable peel-and-stick collection is vinyl. This option requires separate paste.
For the look and the craftsmanship
Material composition is important, but beauty, printing methods, color and the way a room feels deserve attention too. These brands remain worth featuring for their design. Their final Aalign product ratings need their own exact-product review.
Thatcher Studio
Ibo, Gold on Cream Residential Wallpaper
For hand-screen-printed artwork and a richly textured, artisan look
Clay-coated paper, hand-screen-printed, Class A fire-rated. A strong craftsmanship pick. Not all Thatcher designs use the same printing method or substrate.
View the exact design ↗Sandberg Wallpaper
Skog, standard Nonwoven Mural
For Scandinavian, forest-inspired patterns and a sense of nature indoors
Choose the standard nonwoven wallpaper. Sandberg’s Commercial Grade version has a vinyl top layer and should not inherit the standard paper’s materials claims.
View the exact design ↗Farrow & Ball
Atacama Wallpaper
For a timeless pattern with a painted-paper surface and traditional craftsmanship
Handcrafted with Farrow & Ball paint on paper. We are keeping the design distinction but not extending paint VOC claims to the completed wallpaper without matching test data.
View the exact design ↗What makes one wallpaper different from another?
A wallpaper can have a beautiful natural face and still contain a synthetic backing or adhesive. The material on the front is only part of the picture.
Often a good place to start when avoiding a vinyl surface. But “nonwoven” can include a blend of cellulose and synthetic fibers. Check the actual formulation, not just the category name.
Polyvinyl chloride is used for washable, durable surfaces. Formulations vary, including plasticizers and coatings. An impermeable finish can also trap moisture in poorly designed or damp walls.
This describes how it installs, not what it is made of. You can buy PVC-free paper-backed versions as well as conventional vinyl versions. The adhesive is an additional material to consider.
A named PVC-free substrate, clear information about the backing and ink, a compatible adhesive, and documentation that actually applies to the exact product. You do not need to replace wallpaper that is in good condition just because it does not have those details.
Don’t forget what goes behind the paper
Traditional wallpaper needs paste, pre-pasted paper has a water-activated adhesive, and peel-and-stick has an adhesive layer already on it. Primers and surface prep may add further products.
Read the wallpaper maker’s instructions for the correct primer and paste. For products added separately, compare their VOC and chemical-emissions information as well. The easiest product to install is not automatically the one with the lowest emissions.
Most importantly, don’t cover a wall that is damp, water damaged, moldy or developing a persistent smell. Fix the moisture source first. The EPA specifically warns that impermeable vinyl coverings can trap moisture in certain wall conditions.

Which labels are actually useful?
GREENGUARD Gold: a recognized standard for lower chemical emissions. Check whether it covers the finished wallcovering or only the printer’s ink. Those are different claims.
FSC: tells you something about responsible forest sourcing and chain of custody. It does not certify that a wallpaper or its adhesive has low VOC emissions.
Class A fire rating: describes surface burning performance under a fire test. It is not a chemical-safety certificate.
“Non-toxic” or “zero VOC”: broad marketing wording on its own. Look for material specifications or test data that explain what was tested.
Other wall coverings worth considering
The article has always covered more than rolls of paper. These materials bring an entirely different feeling to a room, but they still need a product-specific look at finishes, binders, backing, installation and moisture suitability.
Also worth exploring: real grasscloth, linen-covered walls and embossed paintable paper. They bring beautiful texture, although the backing, treatments, moisture suitability and installation method can change their material profile.
Six different ways to dress a wall
Not everything needs to be wallpaper. These are real products and ideas, from sculptural panels to living greenery and handwoven pieces. They serve different purposes, so I would not force them into one Best / Better / Good ranking.
Oak slat wall panels
The Wood Veneer Hub’s Luxury Oak Natural Core Slatpanel combines real oak veneer over MDF with a backing felt made from recycled material. It brings warmth and rhythm to a wall, with some useful sound absorption.
Good to know: It is not solid wood throughout. For a bedroom or nursery, ask about MDF emissions, the finish and installation adhesive.
Sculptural cork wall tiles
Wicanders Cork Pure Floor & Wall has a high cork content and useful emissions documentation. For something more sculptural, Greenmood’s Sillon is a molded cork acoustic tile that you can rotate into different patterns.
Good to know: Wicanders is glue-down with a protective finish; check the chosen installation adhesive. Sillon’s acoustic result is NRC 0.30, so it helps with echo but will not soundproof a room.
A moss wall without watering
Greenmood Ball Moss creates a lush, dimensional wall from preserved plants. It needs no watering or grow lights and has product-specific sound-absorption testing, which makes it interesting for workspaces and hospitality.
Good to know: Preserved plants are no longer living. Ask about preservation materials, colorants and backing, and avoid direct sun and moisture.
A wall that actually grows
Florafelt’s 12-Pocket Living Wall Panel uses felt made from recycled plastic bottles, with pockets for adding real plants. It is a different experience from a preserved moss wall because you grow and care for the greenery.
Good to know: Plan adequate light, water and drainage, and protect the wall behind it from persistent moisture.
A painterly landscape mural
Wallism’s Down the Road mural has a soft, landscape-like quality that can make a room feel more open. Its Premium option is a PVC-free nonwoven paper, and the brand also offers textured and peel-and-stick versions.
Good to know: Choose the exact material and installation method. Paste-up and self-adhesive versions need different planning.
A handcrafted jute wall hanging
The Citizenry’s Bel Wall Hanging is handwoven from jute in India, with an acacia wood rod. It adds texture, craftsmanship and a botanical pattern without covering or gluing the whole wall.
Good to know: This is wall art, not an installed wall system or an acoustically tested panel. The product is currently listed as final sale.
For installed wall products, always consider the complete system: face material, backing, coatings, adhesive and how the wall handles moisture. These discoveries have not all received an Aalign rating yet.
Real flowers and herbs as a wall surface?
Organoid’s Carpe Diem surface uses real dried flowers, leaves and herbs on a flax backing. It’s a lovely example of biophilic design going beyond printed leafy patterns. There is an actual texture, with natural variation and, in some versions, a noticeable botanical scent.
It is not a straightforward substitute for every room or an automatic health upgrade. Ask about the specific backing, binder, fragrance sensitivity and installation before specifying it. This belongs as a design innovation for readers to discover, rather than an unverified Best-rated wallpaper pick.
Explore Organoid Carpe Diem ↗Think about how the wall will feel, too
An oversized mural can bring the outside in; a fine woven texture can soften a very sleek room; and a bold repeat can make a small powder room fun. Before ordering, tape up a large sample and see it in both daylight and evening light. The same pattern can feel completely different depending on the room’s proportions, furniture and lighting.
A few things I’d want to know before buying
Is peel-and-stick wallpaper always PVC-free?
No. Peel-and-stick only describes the adhesive-backed installation method. Look for the specific material, such as Livette’s Eco Matte or Walls By Me’s PVC-free peel-and-stick, rather than assuming all removable wallpaper is made the same way.
Does GREENGUARD Gold ink mean the wallpaper is GREENGUARD Gold certified?
Not necessarily. Inks can be certified independently of the finished wallpaper. It is useful information, but it does not automatically cover the backing, coating or adhesive. Check the scope of the certification.
What is the difference between pre-pasted and peel-and-stick wallpaper?
Pre-pasted paper activates its adhesive with water. Peel-and-stick arrives with pressure-sensitive adhesive protected by a release liner. Neither term tells you whether the face material contains PVC.
Is grasscloth better for air quality?
Not automatically. Real sisal or other plant fibers can be appealing, but the finished product may use synthetic backing, adhesives or coatings, and natural fibers can be harder to maintain in damp areas.
Should I remove the vinyl wallpaper I already have?
Not simply because it is vinyl. If it is intact, dry and causing no issues, replacement may not be necessary. Give priority to leaks, moisture damage, mold or deteriorating materials. When you do redecorate, you can choose a lower-PVC or PVC-free alternative.
What should I ask before ordering?
Ask which exact material and coating will be shipped, whether it contains PVC, what the adhesive or recommended paste is, which part has emissions testing, how the wall needs to be prepared and whether you can order a sample. For custom wallpapers, check return restrictions and order enough matching material at once.
