Phones, Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth headphones, laptops, tablets, smart devices and electrical systems are all part of your everyday environment.

Most of us are living around several different kinds of electromagnetic fields without realizing they are different from each other, or that the ways to reduce them are different too.

Here is what the research says, the simple things worth doing first, and the products worth knowing about.

What Does the Health Research Actually Say About EMFs?

Research on EMFs is still unfolding, and it is not as simple as saying all exposure is harmful or all exposure is harmless. Different types of EMFs have been studied in different ways, and the honest picture is a mix of established findings, credible open questions, and lab work that raises more questions than it answers.

Cancer

In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans, Group 2B. That means the possibility of a hazard could not be ruled out. It does not mean RF has been proven to cause cancer.

More recent human studies and systematic reviews have generally not shown a consistent increase in brain cancers from ordinary mobile-phone use, though long-term exposure and changing technology continue to be studied.

Children

Several pooled epidemiological studies have found an association between long-term average magnetic-field exposure above roughly 0.3 to 0.4 microtesla and childhood leukemia.

Researchers have not established that magnetic fields caused the increase or identified a clear biological mechanism, but because the association has appeared repeatedly, extremely low-frequency magnetic fields are also classified by IARC as possibly carcinogenic.

There is also correlational research looking at neurological and developmental differences in children with early exposure, though it remains contested and does not establish cause.

Fertility + Cellular Effects

Some animal and laboratory studies have reported oxidative stress, sperm changes and other biological effects under certain RF exposure conditions. Human evidence is less consistent, and current research does not establish that ordinary everyday RF exposure causes infertility.

These studies raise questions worth continuing to investigate, but laboratory findings should not automatically be translated into claims about human disease.

Sleep, Headaches + Other Symptoms

Some people report headaches, fatigue, sleep disruption and other symptoms they associate with electromagnetic exposure. Controlled blinded studies have not consistently established RF as the cause of these symptoms. That does not mean someone’s experience should be dismissed. It means the cause has not been scientifically established.

Where the Research Stands

There are known physical effects at sufficiently high exposures, credible associations still being studied, and laboratory findings that raise questions.

There are also many claims online that go much further than current human evidence supports.

Aalign’s approach is to focus on practical, measurable exposure reduction while continuing to pay attention to how the research develops.

What You Can Do First, Before You Buy Anything

Start with the easiest changes.

Create distance. Do not keep a phone directly beside your pillow or pressed against your body for hours when it can easily sit farther away.

Turn off wireless connections you are not using. Airplane mode, turning off Bluetooth and switching off Wi-Fi on a device can stop unnecessary transmissions.

Use wired connections where they make sense. A computer, television or other device that stays in one place may not need Wi-Fi all day.

Think about placement. A Wi-Fi router does not need to sit beside a bed, desk chair or child’s play area if another location works just as well.

Measure when you need more information. If you are considering shielding a wall, window or room, a meter can help you find the source before spending money trying to reduce it.

EMF Protection Products for You

These are products used directly with you or with the devices you keep closest to your body.

Tablets

DefenderShield Tablet / iPad EMF Protection Case

What it does | Puts a tested shielding layer between the tablet and your body.

Best for | Anyone who regularly uses an iPad or tablet on their lap, especially children.

How it works | The shield works on the side facing your body, while the tablet can still connect and function normally.

Good to know | It does not stop the tablet from transmitting in every direction. Distance and airplane mode are still the simplest options when practical.

Laptops

1. SYB Laptop Pad

What it does | Creates a shielding layer between your laptop and your lap.

Best for | Anyone who regularly works with a laptop directly on their body.

How it works | The pad is designed to reduce fields and heat traveling through the shielded side toward your body.

Good to know | It does not turn off the laptop’s Wi-Fi. Pairing it with wired internet cuts another source of wireless exposure.

2. DefenderShield Laptop EMF Protection Sleeve

DefenderShield laptop EMF protection sleeve used between a laptop and the body

What it does | Combines a laptop sleeve with a shielding layer.

Best for | Someone who wants one product for carrying the laptop and placing between the laptop and body while using it.

How it works | Keep the shielded side between you and the computer while you work.

Good to know | Like the laptop pad, it is directional shielding. It does not stop the laptop itself from transmitting.

Phones

1. SYB Phone Pouch

What it does | Creates a shielding layer between your phone and your body while you carry it.

Best for | Anyone who regularly keeps a phone in a pocket, waistband or bag against the body.

How it works | The shielded side faces your body while the other side allows the phone to remain connected.

Good to know | It protects in one direction. It does not surround the phone or eliminate everything the phone emits.

2. DefenderShield Universal Phone Case

What it does | Builds directional shielding into a phone case.

Best for | Someone who wants shielding built into the case they use every day.

How it works | Position the shielded cover between the phone and your body or head.

Good to know | The phone can still transmit and receive a signal. Speaker mode and distance are still useful whenever practical.

3. WaveBlock EMF Blocking Sticker

What it does | Adds a small shielding layer directly to the device.

Best for | Someone looking for a small add-on rather than a full shielding case.

How it works | The shield covers a specific area of the device rather than enclosing the entire phone.

Good to know | Think of it as targeted, not total. Distance and keeping the phone off your body are bigger changes.

AirPods

WaveBlock AirPods Shield

What it does | Adds a thin shielding layer between the AirPod and your head.

Best for | Regular AirPods users who do not want to switch completely to wired earbuds.

How it works | It is designed to reduce exposure in the direction of your head while allowing Bluetooth to continue working.

Good to know | The AirPod is still transmitting. Wired earbuds remove the Bluetooth transmitter from your ear altogether.

Babies + Close Device Use

SYB Baby Blanket

What it does | Creates a shielding layer between a baby and a nearby phone, tablet or laptop.

Best for | Times when you are holding or feeding a baby and genuinely need to use a device nearby.

How it works | The conductive fabric is placed between the device and the baby’s body.

Good to know | It is an extra layer, not a reason to keep devices close. Distance and keeping phones out of sleeping areas come first.

Wired Earbuds

Apple EarPods or Any Plain Wired Headset

What they do | Let you listen or talk without putting a Bluetooth transmitter in your ear.

Best for | Long calls, podcasts, music or anyone who wants an easy alternative to wireless earbuds.

How they work | The audio travels through the wire while your phone can stay farther from your head.

Good to know | The brand is not important. Any compatible basic wired headset does the job.

Phones + Devices (Different Approach)

Aires Tech Lifetune One

What it does | Takes a different approach from physical shielding. Aires says it reorganizes the electromagnetic field rather than blocking the signal.

Best for | Someone interested in an approach that does not interfere with how their phone, tablet or other wireless device functions.

How it works | The Lifetune One attaches to or is used with a wireless device. Aires describes the technology as changing the structure of the field around it rather than lowering the amount of RF.

Good to know | An RF meter is not expected to suddenly show a lower number. Aires has patents, laboratory work and biological-response research, but it has not been established that the consumer product prevents disease or reduces long-term health risk.

Portable Field Device

Blushield Ultimate Portable

What it does | Brings Blushield’s approach with you instead of keeping the device in one room.

Best for | Someone already interested in Blushield who wants an option for work, travel or everyday use.

How it works | Blushield says its devices create a field intended to influence how the body responds to the electromagnetic environment, rather than physically blocking RF.

Good to know | A normal RF meter is not necessarily going to show a lower reading. This is a different approach from shielding.

Shungite

Shungite Pyramid

Shungite is a naturally carbon-rich stone traditionally used for grounding, purification and energetic balance. Shungite-based materials have shown electromagnetic-shielding potential under specific experimental conditions, but research has not established that a small pyramid placed near electronics neutralizes EMF or meaningfully reduces personal exposure.

Many people still use shungite as an intentional or energetic addition to their space alongside practical exposure-reduction measures. Research involving shungite has generally tested engineered materials, plates, composites or films under defined laboratory conditions, which is different from proving that a loose stone or small pyramid beside a router lowers the RF reaching your body.

Grounding

Earthing

Grounding means electrically connecting your body to the Earth. Outside, that happens naturally when bare skin touches conductive ground. Indoors, Earthing makes products designed to create that connection through the grounding portion of a properly grounded outlet.

When the body is electrically connected to Earth, its electrical potential can equalize with ground. What that may mean for health is still being researched. Small human studies have looked at grounding in relation to sleep, cortisol, pain, stress and other changes. Some have reported promising results, but the studies are small and do not establish broad health benefits.

Humans spent most of our history much more physically connected to the natural environment than we are today. Grounding is one way of reconnecting physically with the Earth.

Earthing Grounding Mat

The Earthing Grounding Mat brings grounding indoors. Use it under your feet while working at a desk, touch it with your hands while working, or place it where your bare skin can stay in contact with it while resting.

The mat connects to the grounding portion of a properly grounded outlet. Earthing provides a tester so you can first confirm that the outlet is actually grounded. Earthing also carries other options, including grounding sheets, pillowcases, patches and bands.

The mat does not block Wi-Fi or shield RF. That is not what grounding is designed to do. And you do not need a product to ground. Bare feet on conductive soil, grass or sand are the simplest version.

These products help you understand or change what is happening in a room, workspace or home.

Measure RF

1. Safe and Sound Pro II

Safe and Sound Pro II RF meter for measuring wireless radiofrequency signals

What it does | Finds RF coming from Wi-Fi routers, phones, Bluetooth devices, smart meters and nearby cellular signals.

Best for | Someone who specifically wants to understand RF around their home or check whether a shielding project actually worked.

How it works | You get a numerical reading and can also hear the signal. Different sources create different sound patterns, which helps you track down where the RF is coming from.

Good to know | It measures RF only. It does not measure electric or magnetic fields from household wiring and appliances.

2. Safe and Sound Classic III

What it does | Gives you a simpler way to scan a room for RF.

Best for | Bedrooms, hotel rooms or anyone who wants an easier first RF detector.

How it works | Color-coded lights and sound help you see when RF levels change as you move around or turn devices on and off.

Good to know | It is simpler than the Pro II and does not give you the same detailed information.

Measure RF + Electric + Magnetic Fields

TriField TF2

What it does | Measures three common types of EMF with one device: RF, electric fields and magnetic fields.

Best for | Someone starting from zero who does not yet know what kind of EMF they are dealing with.

How it works | Walk around a bedroom, office or living area and switch between the different measurements to get a broader picture of the space.

Good to know | If RF is your main concern and you want more detailed RF information, the Safe and Sound Pro II is the stronger choice.

Wired Internet

Cable Matters USB-C Ethernet Adapter

What it does | Lets your laptop use wired internet instead of Wi-Fi.

Best for | Anyone who sits at a computer for hours every day.

How it works | Connect the adapter to your laptop and an Ethernet cable, then switch Wi-Fi off on the computer. The adapter can charge the laptop at the same time.

Good to know | It removes the need for that computer to transmit Wi-Fi. It does not turn off your router or affect Wi-Fi elsewhere in the house. If you want to wire several devices, you may also need a Cat 6 or Cat 6a Ethernet cable and a small Ethernet switch near the router.

Everyday Wired Swaps

Small changes that replace everyday wireless with everyday wired. Any one of them makes a difference. Together they turn a room into a calmer signal environment.

1. Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light HF3520/60

Philips SmartSleep sunrise wake-up light on a bedside table

What it does | Uses gradually increasing light to simulate sunrise before your wake-up time, with optional natural sounds if you need them.

Best for | Getting the phone off the nightstand while creating a gentler way to wake up.

How it works | The light slowly brightens before your alarm time, mimicking the transition from darkness to morning light. It also includes sunset dimming for winding down at night.

Good to know | This is not an EMF shielding product. The reason it belongs here is practical: using a separate alarm makes it much easier to charge your phone farther from the bed or outside the bedroom instead of sleeping with it beside your head.

2. Corded Landline Phone

What it does | Lets you make longer calls at home without keeping a smartphone against your body or using a cordless phone.

Best for | Someone with known RF sensitivity, or anyone who spends a lot of time on calls at home and wants to reduce wireless exposure further.

Good to know | A cordless home phone still communicates wirelessly with its base, so the benefit here is specifically using a corded phone.

3. Wired Keyboard + Mouse

What they do | Remove two small Bluetooth sources from a desk.

Best for | Someone who spends many hours at a workstation, especially if they are already trying to minimize wireless devices around them.

Good to know | These are small sources compared with things like a phone or Wi-Fi router. There is no reason to throw away perfectly good equipment. When you are replacing a keyboard or mouse anyway, choosing wired is an easy option.

Walls

Shielding is a specialist category. Best used after you have measured something specific, so you can shield a real source rather than a general worry.

1. YSHIELD HSF54 Paint

What it does | Helps reduce RF coming through a wall or ceiling.

Best for | A room where measurements show that significant RF is entering through a particular surface.

How it works | The conductive shielding paint goes behind your regular finish paint and creates a barrier that reduces RF passing through the treated surface.

Good to know | This is for a planned shielding project, not something to paint everywhere just in case. Proper installation and grounding are important. Measure before and after.

2. ECOS EMR/EMF Paint

What it does | Creates another type of conductive shielding layer for walls and ceilings.

Best for | Someone looking for a US-available shielding paint that can be covered with normal finish paint afterward.

How it works | Conductive nickel flake in the paint helps reduce RF passing through the treated surface.

Good to know | Know what you are shielding and why before covering a room. Because the paint contains nickel, follow the handling instructions carefully during installation.

Windows

YSHIELD RDF72 Window Film

What it does | Helps reduce RF coming through glass while still allowing most daylight through.

Best for | A window where measurements show that a significant outside RF source is entering the room.

How it works | The transparent shielding film is applied directly to the glass.

Good to know | It only shields the glass it covers, not the frame or surrounding wall. It can also weaken cell or Wi-Fi reception you want inside the room.

Shielding Fabric

Faraday Defense CYBER NC Fabric

What it does | Provides a flexible shielding material when paint or window film is not practical.

Best for | Targeted projects such as lining an enclosure, shielding a specific area or creating a curtain over a problem window.

How it works | Conductive nickel and copper in the fabric reduce RF passing through a properly positioned barrier.

Good to know | Placement, gaps and seams change how well it works. A loose piece hanging somewhere in the room will not perform like a properly designed barrier.

For the Room

Blushield Classic Ultra

What it does | Takes a different approach from physically blocking RF. Where the paints and fabric above reduce a measured signal, Blushield works at the room level in a different way.

Best for | Someone interested in Blushield’s approach for an entire room rather than a portable device.

How it works | Blushield says its device creates a low-power field intended to influence how the body responds to the electromagnetic environment around it.

Good to know | An RF meter is not necessarily going to show a lower number. A small 12-week pilot study reported changes in sleep, cognition and heart-rate variability, but without a placebo or separate control group, it cannot establish that Blushield caused those changes.

What EMF Actually Is

EMF stands for electromagnetic field. In normal words, EMFs are invisible areas of energy around anything that uses electricity or communicates wirelessly.

A lamp plugged into the wall has an EMF around it. So does a Wi-Fi router, a phone talking to a cell tower, Bluetooth earbuds, wiring inside the walls, appliances, laptops, TVs, chargers and smart devices. They do not all create the same kind of field, and they do not all carry the same energy.

The Easiest Way to Think About EMFs at Home

Wireless devices. Phones, Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth earbuds, tablets, smart watches, smart meters and cell towers use radiofrequency, or RF.

Electrical devices + wiring. Appliances, chargers, power supplies, electrical panels and wiring can create electric and magnetic fields.

Some devices create more than one type. A laptop, for example, can use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth while its electronics and power supply also create lower-frequency electric and magnetic fields.

That is why one EMF product cannot solve everything. Shielding paint does something very different from grounding. A wired internet connection does something different from an AirPods shield. Some products, like Aires or Blushield, take a different approach entirely.

A Quick Note on Frequency

Frequency describes how fast an electromagnetic wave cycles and is measured in hertz. Think of musical notes: higher notes cycle faster than lower ones.

Frequency does not tell you how strong the EMF is. Frequency describes the type of wave. Strength, or intensity, is a separate measurement.

Phones, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth use non-ionizing radiation, which is different from higher-energy ionizing radiation such as X-rays.

What a Meter Can and Cannot Tell You

A meter turns something invisible into a number you can compare. It is not a diagnosis.

A meter can help you answer practical questions:

  • Where is this signal coming from?
  • Is it stronger here than over there?
  • Does moving farther away change it?
  • If I turn off this device, does the reading go down?
  • Did the change I just made actually reduce the field I was trying to reduce?

Two limits worth stating plainly: a meter measures fields, not symptoms. And a lower number after shielding proves the field went down, not that anyone became healthier. Those are useful limits to understand, not reasons to skip measuring.

Blue light. This is the specific wavelength of light that phones, tablets, laptops and LED screens emit heavily. It is not the kind of EMF we are talking about in this guide, and it is not ionizing radiation. But too much bright, blue-heavy light at the wrong time of day can affect sleep because your body reads it as daytime. The simple version: turn on Night Shift on your phone after sunset, use warmer bulbs around 2700K or lower in the evening, keep screens out of the bedroom for the last hour before sleep and, if you want, wear blue-light glasses in the evening.

Read Aalign’s Blue Light Guide.

Dirty electricity. This is unwanted electrical noise riding on your home’s wiring. Modern electronics and switching power supplies (LED bulbs, phone chargers, computer power supplies, TVs, solar inverters and dimmer switches) can contribute to it. It travels through the same wiring your appliances plug into and is different from RF, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. If you want to address it, plug-in filters such as the Satic Power Perfect Plug are one option, and whole-home systems like the Satic Power Perfect Box take a broader approach.

Both of these belong on the same shelf as EMF work. Modern indoor spaces can be electronically loud, and you can lower the noise from more than one direction.

Before You Buy Anything

Where is the exposure coming from? Start with the source.

Could distance solve it? Moving a phone, router or device farther away may be enough.

Can you turn something off? A wireless connection you are not using does not need to stay on.

Would wired work instead? Ethernet and wired headphones are easy examples.

Are you considering shielding? Measure first whenever possible.

What was actually tested? A material performing well in a laboratory does not automatically prove that the finished product improves health.

How does the product actually work? Physical shielding, Aires, Blushield and grounding are doing different things.

Did the change actually work? If you install shielding or make another significant change, measure again afterward.

Point of Alignment

We live inside a physical, electrical and natural environment all at once.

Some parts of that environment are easy to measure. Others are still being explored.

Aalign’s approach is to stay curious without making an idea more certain than it is. We can measure RF. We can move a router. We can use wired connections or tested shielding when there is a reason for it. We can also spend more time connected to nature, explore grounding, keep shungite if it has meaning for us, and pay attention to emerging ideas about how our bodies interact with the electrical environment around us.

The goal is to understand what each choice is actually doing and make the ones that make sense for your life.
